MLK Weekend

So this is a little late...but yeah...

As I stated earlier, Paul and I were planning to "get away" for a mini-vacation to Santa Cruz and Monterey MLK weekend.  Short, but fun.  I'm definitely glad we did it.  It was a bit cold, but when you're walking along the ocean in January can you really complain?

Santa Cruz is about 2-2 1/2 hours south and Monterey is about 3 hours south of where I live.  Not too far, but far enough you don't want to do it as a day trip.

Sunday, we left Petaluma and headed toward Santa Cruz.  Once we reached the seaside town, we walked along the boardwalk for a little while and had lunch on the pier.  Imagine the state fair (or county fair depending on where you live) and that's basically the Santa Cruz boardwalk.  Lots of fried foods, haunted houses, and roller coasters...but this one is along a beach and the ocean!  It reminded me a lot of Coney Island too.  We did give in and ride one of the roller coasters.  It was a wooden roller coaster called the Giant Dipper.  It's something like the sixth oldest coaster in the US...sadly no pictures of that.

Walking along the boardwalk

I had always heard tales of such things, but until this day I thought they were just myth.  (No, I did not try one.)

After lunch, we grabbed a candy apple for the road and had to rush over to The Mystery Spot to make it in time for our "guided tour." The Mystery Spot is a tourist trap in Santa Cruz that claims to be supernatural spot that defies the laws of physics and gravity. On the guided tour we were shown numerous examples to demonstrate this. There are several "theories" on why this is....in reality it's just a bunch of optical illusions and theatrics...but for $5 it's a different and fun way to kill an hour.
This was me trying like hell to stand up "straight."  I have to admit I got pretty dizzy at one point.

But however is Paul hanging like that??

Our guide, Wade, outside of the house
Random victims from our tour group, including Paul in the middle, standing in order of height

And now they're all the same height!  Oooooh!  Aaaaaah!

They give out free bumper stickers at the end of every tour...heck yes I took one.
After all that a chocolate covered apple is necessary

Next, we moved further south to Monterey, and this would be where we spent the night.  Lucky for me, Paul is a LivingSocial ninja.  He was able to find a super nice hotel right on Cannery Row and basically next door to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (all the touristy stuff Monterey has to offer) at a very discounted rate.  Sunday night we walked along Cannery Row, stopping in random shops along the way.

View from our room

Know how you know you're in a nice hotel?  You get a f'ing bonsai tree and zen garden in your room.

A little gem we found in one of the shops

John Steinbeck was from the Monterey area and used it in several of his novels.  So, we saw his name *a lot* while we were walking around.

...I have no words...

This was one of those fortune teller machines...but this one took it to a whole new level of creepy.

The hotel had a couple fire pits right by the water...I don't care how cold it is, I'm taking advantage of that!

Trying to stay warm by the fire

Paul decided we should really go high class and get room service for breakfast the next morning.  Neither one of expected what we got.

This was rolled up to our room in the morning.  Omelette with smoked fish (I'm drawing a blank of what kind right now), feta cheese, and tomatoes...complete with roasted potatoes and fresh squeezed juice.

This was basically my view as I ate breakfast Monday morning.  Fireplace.  Ocean.  It didn't suck.
Good morning Monterey!

Paul and I kept giggling randomly because neither one of us could fully grasp that this was really how we were having breakfast.  After breakfast we packed up, checked out, and headed over to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

So long super nice hotel

The Monterey Bay Aquarium isn't particularly huge but the stuff they do have is pretty well done.

Sea Dragon....so weird

And now back to reality...when is the next long weekend?

12 January, 2012

And now something cute and completely unrelated to counteract the previous post

I want a pet owl

The one where I anger pretty much everyone

I try not to post much politically fueled things.  Usually all it does is start a fight.  Growing up in such a "red state" I know the few people who have similar mindsets as myself but those, the majority, who feel different than me will just get mad and start a fight.  And, unlike some I know, I hate arguing politics with those who have very political views than me.  I'm not going to change your mind, and you sure as hell aren't changing mine.  All that gets accomplished is my blood pressure rising.  But sometimes, enough is enough.

Today is one of those days.

I am so sick of seeing Facebook statuses about the four Marines.  In my humble opinion both sides need to shut the fuck up.

To the people that think this was okay or not a big deal:  Contrary to what so many think (and sometimes tell me I think) I support the troops.  They have signed up for a service and duty I never have and, in all honestly, am probably not capable of doing.  And trust me, that is something I wholeheartedly respect.  (But guess what, there are other careers out there that do the same.  Police or Firefighters, anyone?)  And God (or whomever) bless their families...after everything they see and go through they need people who love and support them to make it through everything.  However, what those four shitheads did was not okay...on any level.  Yes, the Taliban has, would, and probably will do worse to us...but is our troops acting even in the slightest bit like the assholes that make up the Taliban something we're really going to condone??  Aren't we supposed to be better than them??  And here's a real kicker, "our side" can and do sometimes do wrong.  It's war.  It's ugly.  It brings out the worst in people.  Our troops do not walk on water.  What disgusts me about these guys is not so much the act itself, it's that they basically nullified what so many have risked and lost lives and limbs for over there.  Sadly it only takes a few to undo the good of many...but that's nothing new.  Also, it makes my blood boil when I see people saying unless you've served or you are a close family member of someone who has served you're not allowed to and have no right to have an opinion on these things...unless said service member or family member's opinion has a left lean to it....then their opinion and service don't really count and they need to shut up.  Double standards are fun.

To the people who are livid over this:  As I stated above, what these dicks did was not cool on any level.  This adds fuel to the fire for the Taliban. I hope those guys are punished to the fullest extent of the law.  The troops still deployed over there, who, of course, had nothing to do with this act, are going to be the ones who have to deal with the repercussions because of a few dumb asses.  However, and I'm going to repeat myself again here, it's war.  It's ugly.  It brings out the worst in people.  These men and women have been through, lost, and seen more ugly of the human race than most of us ever have or will.  No, those Marines were not treating the corpses with the respect any human should be shown but that's because they can't think of these people as fellow human beings with families and feelings. It's kill or be killed.  It's surviving.  They're the enemy.  If they did think of who they're fighting as just another person who needs a hug or something there's no way to do the things necessary to survive in war or probably live with yourself afterward. I know it's not at all the same thing but I've worked in health care for a while now...I know how it works to "detach" yourself from other people or your emotions as a way to do your job sometimes.  So, yeah, not exactly the same as shooting at someone or being shot at, but hopefully you know what I'm getting at.  I'm not saying it's right.  I'm not saying I'm okay with it.  I'll never be one of the ones in the streets chanting "USA" because we finally successfully killed somebody we really don't like.  But I am saying I completely understand the state of mind and why it exists.  So, while those Marines are a special level of douche, unless you've been in these people's shoes and know how you would act under these circumstances, let's not throw too many stones.

And there's that.  I'm probably going to regret writing this one, but at this moment in time I don't care.

It's a hard life

This last weekend Paul and I took Kenai out one of the dog beaches at Bodega Bay (in EARLY January! It was in the upper 60s! I'm still not used to this weather.).  We thought it would there would be lots of good photo opportunities.

Here's a 10 second preview of what the beach was like:

So, needless to say, there weren't many photo ops.  Kenai always gets insanely excited when we go to the beach.  Though he was a royal pain, he was a very happy, very tired puppy when we left the beach, so it wasn't a total loss.  And I introduced Paul to the most amazing crab sandwich and clam chowder ever.  (If you've visited me, chances are you  know where I'm talking about in Bodega Bay.)

This past weekend I also started working on a goal of mine.  I was talked into do a half marathon (by Paul...and he's extra crazy and doing a full marathon) in late July.  I've done a half marathon before, but it was a few years ago and I think I gave myself a whopping month to train. I want to try to do it right this time.  Wish me luck, I'm going to need it.  I've run two days so far this week.  My speed or times are nothing to be proud of but you've got to start somewhere, right?

In a couple weeks I'm going to get to mark another group I've been wanting to see forever off my list.  MODEST MOUSE.  Jan 25th.  F**k yeah.

This is probably the most popular song by them:

I can't believe I've got to cross so many people off my list just in this past year!  Pretty much I just need Radiohead (which may be happening in April) and Jack White and all the big dogs that I've wanted to see for years and years, and honestly never thought I'd actually get to see live, are taken care of.

Since this weekend will be a long one (and Tahoe has been having a crap winter for skiing) Paul and I will be heading down to Monterey Bay to check out Santa Cruz and the boardwalk there and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  Both of which are about 2-3 hours south of here.  I'll do my best to remember to take pictures!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: living in the bay area really sucks, but somebody's gotta do it.

So long 2011, hello 2012

It seemed to be a Kenai themed Christmas this year. Lots of dog themed things, treats for him, and other goodies.
Let's start with Kenai's lovely Christmas outfit.  Muahaha
Because my parents like to encourage my bad habits they sent matching pajamas for Kenai and me for Christmas...and this was by far the most entertaining picture of that moment.  Kenai looks like he's laying down the law.

Twinsies

Kenai looooves Christmas
I felt like this was my first "adult Christmas".  Paul and I actually made dinner for Christmas.  Roast chicken, broccoli casserole, and mashed potatoes.  Simple, not "traditional," but tasty.

Kenai was sure not to stray far.  I know the paper crown makes it look like we work at Burger King but it was part of a gift and we thought this was as good as time as any to wear them.
Show that chicken who's boss!
A real meal. Like an adult.

In addition to the lovely PJs Mom & Dad gave Kenai and myself, they sent one of those clay ornaments that you make with a paw print.  As you can imagine, it was a funny, frustrating, entertaining task.

The subject of our Christmas art project

"What are you doing??" Getting the clay (or whatever) ready for the ornament making.

It took both Paul and I but we finally got the paw print!

Kenai closely supervising as I write his name and date the ornament

One last entertaining Kenai related gift:

Best dog toy ever

Mine!

Since Paul and I had Monday off we headed down to the San Francisco Zoo.  Even though it's not a particularly big zoo we spent most of the day there.  Paul suggested we get there early for the penguin feeding.  That was a great suggestion.  I definitely got my money's just in that bit.

These two guys were ready to eat.  They were staked out in the eating area well before feeding time started.

This guy however didn't emerge from "bed" until breakfast was being handed out...my kind of penguin.

So, for the record, there was NO zoom used for this picture.  I was really this close to a GOD DAMN grizzly bear! I was minorly freaking out.
I don't remember what this thing was but it looked like a dinosaur

Aaand we're checking out our feet
Polar bear with his treat

Kangaroo letting it all hang out
Watching chimpanzees is crazy...they're so close to human, yet not.

Sleeping Koalas.  They looked like stuffed animals

Wine and IPA at the zoo.  Welcome to the bay area.

A lot of lawn ornaments

On the lookout.

The two in the back were about to throw down.

It's not a great picture, but it's a monkey with a mustache...it needs to be posted.

Looks a little awkward to me, but hey whatever works.
We watched the gorillas for at least 20 minutes.  The baby was way cute.

2011 shaped up to be a pretty decent year but I have a feeling 2012 will be even better.  *fingers crossed*  After our outing at the zoo and say so far, so good!
